Indianola fell short in its bid for a return trip to the Class 5A softball state tournament after dropping a 3-2 regional final to 10th-ranked Dowling Catholic on Tuesday in Indianola.

The Maroons scored the decisive run of the contest in the ninth inning to top No. 8 Indians in the regional championship contest.
Indianola placed sixth in the 5A state tournament last season. The school won a Class 4A state softball title in 2012 and finished third in 2013.
This year’s 5A state competition begins on July 18 in Fort Dodge.
